This award-winning layered garden redefines how we think about compact spaces.

In Jakarta, Indonesia, RAD+ar architects have designed a multifunctional public space called the Split Garden. It combines a restaurant, bar, and rooftop beer garden within a compact footprint, using a split-level approach to maximise functionality and leisure.

The design was driven by rising land values and the challenge of integrating diverse uses while preserving natural elements. The aim was to create distinct zones that promote fluid movement and connect visitors with nature. The layout directs guests from the ground-floor restaurant to a mezzanine bar, then to the rooftop beer garden, each space offering unique sensory and visual experiences.

Crucially, the project maintains the existing greenery, orienting the building north-south to preserve mature trees at both ends. The design incorporates natural light, greenery, and scenic views to enhance the user experience. A key feature involves creating a wind tunnel connecting two large trees, facilitating natural ventilation and cooling, while maintaining the outdoor atmosphere.

Structural elements are integrated into the spatial planning to allow smooth transitions across levels and zones. This approach minimizes material use and energy consumption, making the project more sustainable. The use of natural, environmentally friendly materials further underscores this commitment.

The design also emphasizes aesthetics and functionality, with diagonal cantilevered structures and contemporary facades harmonizing with the tropical environment. Gardens between spaces improve visual flow and help connect different elements, creating an inviting and cohesive environment.

The project is one of the winners of the Architecture MasterPrize 2024.
