Altfield has been a purveyor of fine Chinese antique furniture since opening its first gallery in 1982, focusing on 18th- and 19th-century pieces as well as sculpture and decorative objects from Southeast Asia. Celebrating more than three decades in the city, this month it reopened its Prince’s Building location after months of renovations, resulting in a cleaner, more modern look that focuses attention squarely on the works.

Of particular note are the cabinets displaying silver, gold and jewellery pieces – they’re done up in white lacquer for a sense of understated elegance that doesn’t distract from the furniture and larger artworks at the front of the shop. The store will also be rotating out pieces from its showroom, Altfield Gallery Annex in Aberdeen, so that visitors can experience the full range of offerings. Don’t miss the gallery’s many exhibitions, either; its latest event will be a showcase of Japanese Buddhist works.
