The benefits of travel are well documented: brainpower can be boosted by new experiences and fresh horizons. Travel not only broadens your perspective, but scientific studies show it also improves your cognitive health and inspires creativity. Designers are particularly receptive to their surroundings, constantly gathering ideas and influences – often subconsciously. They may find their journeys referenced in their work, and sometimes at the core of their aesthetic or the driving force behind their latest creations. We speak to five creatives across the globe about the destinations that inspire them in this exclusive web series.

Christian Lacroix’s right-hand man for more than two decades, Sacha Walckhoff now designs the men’s ready-to-wear collections and accessories as well as the home decor range. He also creates his own projects, such as the recent Reverso collection of mouth-blown glasses and vases produced in the Verreum workshop in Bohemia. Sacha is charmed by many things, but particularly the history and cuisine of Beirut.

Hotel Havens

I first went to Beirut for the wedding of Nicolas and Christina Moussallem of the David/Nicolas design studio – and I stayed at the Albergo Hotel (pictured), a historical building that has a beauty only time and taste are able to give to a place. It was delightful. I also fondly remember staying at Tokyo’s Okura Hotel in the 1990s. I revisited recently. Sadly, the main building, with its mythical lobby constructed in 1963, was pulled down last year. But the south wing is still standing – though not for long, I’m afraid. The Scandinavian style melding with exquisite Japanese taste exudes a unique charm.

Amazing Architecture

In Tripoli, I visited the amazing complex built by Oscar Niemeyer from 1967 to 1974 for the international fair that never took place because of the war. The complex is still standing in its sharp nudity and beauty – it’s overwhelming.

Stylish Sips

My partner and I recently had an ice-cold green tea in Kyoto just after visiting the architectural splendour that is the Golden Pavilion. It was very close to my idea of heaven.

Favourite Finds

I love finding well-crafted objects, of course, and as a product designer I also need to live with my own creations to ensure my vision works in real life. I’m currently enjoying the look of three handcrafted blown-glass stools I did for Verreum.

Intrepid Inspiration

I am an urban person and I’m constantly inspired by the buzz of cities and their history. From the famous landmarks of Paris, Rome, London, New York, Tokyo and Barcelona to the ancient charms of Beirut and Tripoli – I enjoy them all.

I never miss La Maison Rouge exhibitions in Paris. The foundation showing private art collections from all over the world is a unique concept which has a profound effect on me.

Dream Homes

I sometimes think I’d like to live in Los Angeles. I like to dream about it, but I’m not sure the reality would match my dreams.
