Christmas Wishlist: Beverly Cheng

Christmas is just around the corner – leading up to the holidays, Home Journal‘s editorial team reveals what we’d like for Christmas. Senior deputy editor Beverly Cheng is hoping for these items to make their way under the tree.

If there’s one thing that can make all the difference in a home, it’s a beautiful rug. With vintage Beni Ourain Moroccan rugs becoming all the rage lately, I can’t help but jump on the bandwagon after spotting these colourful renditions via Another Ballroom – an online shop offering handwoven rugs fitted to custom interiors. Coming home to find something stylish, soft and fluffy under my feet would be a huge improvement over cold flooring.

On a recent family reunion in Mexico, my parents and I ventured outside our resort to the little bohemian surfing town of Sayulita, where we encountered the beautiful products at trendy boutiqueEvoke The Spirit. Its Mexican-inspired, slow-designed homewares are made by artisans working in a sunlit studio down the road. The woven blankets and cushions, hand-knotted macrame and custom-made cow skulls caught my eye in particular. The cow skulls are truly one of a kind; if only I had bought one to bring back with me, even if it would have meant a face-off with US customs.

Our flat is so compact that we have little room for extra furnishings, let alone more art, which is why I opt for sculptural lighting over anything that might take up more precious floor space. Anna Karlin has dreamy home goods that are fun and whimsical without bordering on kitsch. Her bold, nineties-style graphic print rugs, stools and cushions top my shopping list, not to mention her cool range of brass pendant lights.

After running around all holiday season shopping for gifts and going to endless parties and dinners, I can really appreciate a good shoulder bag that transitions effortlessly from daytime to nighttime outings. I’m lusting over variations of this Yves Saint Laurent Monogram Envelope chain purse, which is a classic and elegant go-to. I particularly like this black and white edition with an eye-catching gold monogram, which can easily go with jeans and a leather jacket or a sleek evening dress and ruby red lips.

I never thought I’d ever admit this out loud: I’ve become an athlete. At least this is what everyone else calls me once I tell them I’m training for the upcoming Tokyo Marathon, taking place on 28 February. My current sporty must-have is a brand spanking new pair of 2XU compression tights. I’ve been running in mine since my inaugural half marathon last year in Southern France and I wouldn’t trade them for anything – they fit well, are breathable, and provide the support needed when your calves are swelling up. I’m hoping that their winter collection tights will give me the extra boost – and warmth – I’ll need run when I run my first full marathon.

Travelling inspires me; and more often than not, I spend endless hours meticulously planning each detail of my journey. But after all the time and energy I put into choosing the perfect destination, it’d be nice to leave all the scheduling and booking duties to someone else – such as the travel experts atJacada Travel. For 2016, I’m dreaming of the contrasting sand dunes and clear blue skies of Jacada Travel’s nine-night journey across stunning Namibia. This is definitely going to be the year my partner and I return to our favourite continent – Africa.
