Longlands, a 9,000sqft converted sawmill from the 16th century in the UK’s North Norfolk has become the centre of creativity for contemporary jeweller Monica Vinader and her staff of 45, who compose most of the brand’s design, customer care and visual merchandising teams. Though a seemingly unlikely location for an office, Monica grew up in the area and saw the potential of the space – particularly with its high ceilings and the historic, exposed brick facade, which gives the building its old-world charm. Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights bring plenty of natural light into the open-plan office, helping transform Longlands into a bright and cheerful atelier. Monica has added hints of her own character, with personal items that she’s collected from around the globe.

What was your goal for this countryside atelier?
The office space needed to feel inspirational, whether that was through interesting furniture pieces or the beautiful surroundings of the Holkham Estate. Natural light was a massive factor in the design of the space – having good light is so important when working with gemstones and metals.

What are your favourite design details?
I really love the exposed brick walls in my meeting room – so much so I am looking to replicate this in our upcoming new store.

Tell us more about your mood boards.
Our mood boards are where the product journey begins. We take inspiration from everywhere – from architecture and art to natural objects and forms, then use these to develop the shapes and structures within our new collections. These don’t change each season, but are pulled together at the inception of a product or collection.

Talk us through the art in your space.
I like a variety of art, from abstract to photography, and am always keen to support local artists. My favourite pieces featured in our Norfolk office are a Harry Cory Wright piece in our cafe and one of Mark Luscombe-Whyte’s amazing photographs in our studio.

What do you love most about working at Longlands?
Being surrounded by beautiful stretches of space and nature creates a calm and restful atmosphere amidst the craziness of the day. I always encourage the team to take a walk on the estate grounds or pop down to the white, sandy beaches.
