Client Brief

The owners are passionate about art and music with the wife being a professional organist. They wanted their home to reflect their individuality, breaking free from traditional layouts. A dedicated space for a customised pipe organ was essential, designed to feel open and balcony-like for both music appreciation and socialising. The husband’s key request was an eye- catching entrance that set the tone for the whole house. Furniture needed to be flexible, easily moved, and reconfigured as required.

Concept & Style

The design employs contemporary minimalism with careful attention to detail. A bold collage of geometric wallpaper in blue, rust and red contrasts with a mix of eclectic furniture styles, set against a stark white feature wall, creates a striking visual dialogue. The space feels like an art gallery where each corner showcases a different piece of art. Maeve Rita, SOSA’s lead designer, said: “Every area is bespoke, with refined details akin to art itself – that’s at the heart of SOSA’s design approach.”

Challenges

One significant challenge was working around existing structural walls, limiting the scope for reconfiguration. The couple’s varied collection of art and furniture also posed a challenge: how to integrate these pieces into the existing space to create a harmonious, yet fresh environment. “They were very particular about lighting, as they wanted to see every detail of their artwork. We chose low blue light and high colour rendering index light fittings to create a gentle and authentic viewing experience.” she said.

Solutions

At SOSA, the focus extends beyond aesthetics to include sustainability, energy efficiency, and healthy living. The design used layered collaged forms and asymmetrical arches to reflect the flexible furniture arrangements and diverse spatial functions. For example, the dining room features a bespoke resin dining table by Hareody Home, whilst the colour- changing Zic Zac ceiling light at the entrance adds dynamic visual interest and focal points throughout the space.“The bespoke feature wall in the dining area, made of irregular overlapping arches, guides the eye and becomes a key visual element right at the entrance.”

The entire house utilises Towngas Lifestyle’s Smart Lighting by LOPA, a system with a high colour rendering index and low blue light levels, which beautifully highlights the artwork. It supports scene-setting and dimming, controlled conveniently via a smartphone app to suit various moods and furniture arrangements. It is also highly energy efficient, saving close to 50% electricity when dimming 20% by the system.
