Stay Living Ltd. designed a 490 sq. ft. minimalist home in Tseung Kwan O, weaving refined details into a stylish, livable residence for the homeowner.

Client Brief

The couple wanted a minimalist design with a touch of style, steering clear of typical black-and-white schemes. Instead, they preferred a clean look complemented by subtle, yet elegant details. Practicality was key – ample hidden storage was necessary, along with dedicated home offices for each of them, given their work-from-home arrangements.

Concept & Style

The design emphasises understated sophistication with warm textures over a black, white, and grey base. Mirrored panels above the TV wall enhance the space perception. The kitchen features sleek black-and-white chequered tiles with sharp lines, complemented by grey cabinetry.

The master bedroom’s headboard wall has soft curves as a visual focal point. Glass doors in the front, study, and kitchen allow natural light, improving the lighting in the hallways and entrance areas.

Challenges

Balancing intricate details with a minimalist style was challenging to ensure the space remained beautiful and functional. As Lawrence Chan, of Stay Living, explains: “We aimed to avoid a generic white-and-black space by adding curated details and thoughtful elements throughout.”

Solutions

Since the couple work remotely and seldom dine outside the home, the large desks in the living room also serve as workspace stations, with allocated space for a printer, making the living area versatile. An angled, L-shaped lighting trough, connects the living and dining areas with a gentle glow, softening the room separation.

“The tilted light trough creates a layered lighting effect,” Chan notes. Tall cabinets in the dining area and ample storage in the bedroom and study add to the practicality of the home. A screen wall near the balcony reduces glare and adds visual depth.

Tips

  • Use black-and-white tiles with contrasting grout lines to create a bold, modern focal point.

  • The herringbone flooring complements the overall style, though it’s not ideal for Japanese or Scandinavian themes where it might clash.

  • Elevated, floating shelves for books and storage create a more open feel, leaving about a 20cm clearance from the floor for easy cleaning and a lighter look.

  • Add angled ceiling recesses to replace traditional straight lines and infuse dynamism into the space.
