In Santo Tirso, Portugal, this home demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a seemingly unremarkable setting into a serene and elegant retreat.
Designed by Ricardo Azevedo Arquitecto, this 4,200 square feet single-story home sits lightly on a gently sloping plot, embracing its surroundings while creating its own world of privacy and calm.
The house is all about balance. Its linear structure hovers slightly above the ground, with an inward-facing outdoor space that shields it from unappealing views. This design approach provides both connection to the landscape and detachment from its imperfections. The result is a home that feels simultaneously rooted and self-contained, offering its inhabitants a quiet, elevated way of living.
The greatest challenge, as described by the architectural studio, was "to desire a singular environment of added quality, without 'noise.' To still feel that place, but enjoy a reality 'of their own,' contemporary and enhanced in quality."

Simplicity drives the design. Horizontal circulations connect social areas, private spaces, and leisure zones, ensuring a natural flow throughout the home. Materials are carefully chosen for their functionality and warmth: glass and aluminum bring lightness and clarity, while concrete and paint add grounding and energy. Large glass openings blend indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, with a rolling green lawn extending the living area outward.
