Located in a 49-year-old building in Kennedy Town, this home has undergone a modern makeover by Win Key Workshop’s design team.

Drawing inspiration from Japanese Zen style, the home incorporates storage and display areas specifically tailored for the homeowner, who is an avid climber. This residential design project won the gold award for small residential projects at the Home Journal Awards 2023.

The layout of this home encompasses a bedroom, a living room, an open kitchen and a bathroom. Win Key Workshop’s designers said, "Since the living room is so spacious, we created specialised areas for displaying and storing the homeowner's climbing equipment, integrating their lifestyle needs into the design to bring life to the space."

The design uses plenty of walnut wood for a warm and natural atmosphere with its deep woody tones. This warm material is paired with elegant grey accent walls, resulting in an exquisite aesthetic that exudes sophistication.

Moreover, having an open kitchen not only gives the illusion of a larger space, but it also lets in abundant natural light and fresh air through the windows, resulting in a rejuvenating and breezy ambiance. The kitchen also features dark cabinets and white tiles, creating a captivating contrast that adds extra visual appeal.

Interior Design

To create a distinct separation between the entrance hall and kitchen, the design team opted for a translucent glass partition. This choice allows sunlight to effortlessly pass through, illuminating the entrance hall.

In the bathroom, grey tiles contribute to a harmonious atmosphere on the floor and walls. Blue tiles adorn the walls near the basin for a fun pop of colour.

"This design embraces the concept of an open-plan layout, effortlessly flowing through the living room, bedroom, and open kitchen,” Win Key Workshop’s designers tell us. “By incorporating raised platforms in both the living room and bedroom, we introduce elements of Japanese tatami while maximising storage capacity, creating a harmoniously organised living space.” Furthermore, the inclusion of a storage room in the residence adds an extra level of functionality, offering ample storage space for the homeowner.
