Spanning 1,388 sq.ft, this minimalist Villa Lucca apartment is defined by depth and contrast, conceived by Epic Interior Design.

Client Brief

The homeowner, who primarily resides overseas, envisioned a cosy and relaxing retreat for holidays. The design was crafted to create a warm, comfortable, and inviting space, with an emphasis on simplicity and tranquillity.

The chosen aesthetic revolves around a minimalist approach, combining contrasting light and dark tones to foster a harmonious and peaceful environment. Steven Sze, founder of Epic Interior Design, explains: “The client envisioned a simple, comfortable space with a hotel-like ambience for unwinding during holidays. They specifically requested a design that emphasised a contrast between dark and light hues, as well as open, flexible spaces.”

Concept & Style

The overall design is centred around a minimalist aesthetic, where light and dark tones are carefully balanced to create a calm and comfortable atmosphere while enhancing spatial depth. Through precise proportions and attention to detail, the design strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and elegance.

Sze adds: “During their first visit to our office, the client was drawn to the style of our space and decided to use it as their inspiration. From there, the collaboration came together seamlessly.”

Challenges

The original layout of the living room posed several structural challenges. The TV wall appeared too small in proportion to the large, expansive sofa, creating a visual imbalance. Additionally, the long and narrow shape of the room made the space feel overly elongated, which diminished its overall harmony. Another issue was the exposed ceiling beams, which disrupted the flow of the design and detracted from the overall aesthetic.

Solutions

The designers merged the TV wall with a hidden door leading to the bedroom, creating a unified feature wall. This visually widened the space and brought balance to the proportions of the sofa and the wall. Partial false ceilings were introduced to conceal the exposed beams. A square ceiling structure was added above the living room, with concealed lighting grooves along the edges. This softened the lighting and reduced the visual impact of the narrow, elongated layout.

Tips

  • To harmonise the interior with the outdoor environment, incorporate earthy tones or add accents of orange and green for a natural touch.
  • If a false ceiling feels too heavy, use concealed lighting grooves along the edges. Indirect lighting creates a sense of lightness while enhancing the overall ambience.
  • For spaces with a neutral colour palette, add depth through contrasting materials. For example, use metallic or stone elements between wood panels on feature walls to enrich the visual texture.
