Aphrodisiac” isn’t a word commonly associated with interiors, yet there is a growing cohort of Chinese designers who aren’t shying away from the lustier elements of spatial design.

Among them is Fuzhou, Fujian-based designer Alex Xie of DC Design, who has harnessed the mysterious and intoxicating power of black to create an abode rich in drama and chiaroscuro. Spanning 2,900sqft, the home’s palette of black, grey and pure white is an experiment in the deeper meanings that arise when these three components of the monochrome spectrum interact.

Split into three floors, the family home comprises four bedrooms and two balconies. Dominant materials include Carrara marble, steel and dark wood veneer, although warmth is strategically injected into the space via rose gold fixtures and splashes of colour in statement furniture pieces. Meanwhile, shuttered windows elevate the sense of gravitas throughout the home with its geometric filtering of natural light.
