Hot on the heels of Hong Kong’s Art Week, Sotheby’s Spring Sales give one more reason for collectors to empty their pockets, starting today and running until April 6 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Coinciding with the sales is special exhibition Asian Design: China, Japan, Korea  which will showcase 50 pieces of furniture including works such as the Nendo Cabbage Chair by Oki Sato and the Glass Chair by Shiro Kuramata.

A section will also be dedicated to works from Chinese singer Dadawa’s newly launched brand of furnishings, Kanjian, which celebrates the revival of traditional crafts with collaborations between artisans and regional designers. I want to bring to life the lost arts and reintroduce them into our modern day lifestyle in China, shares Dadawa (née Zhu Zheqin). I want to show the spirit of who we are, our generation and what we’re trying to do. Works such as the Cell vases, a pair of cloisonné ceramic vases, were products of a collaboration with Michael Young. Other pieces span delicate earthenware and silver tea services as well as an electric guitar decorated with lacquer.

It’s not the first time Sotheby’s has sold contemporary designer furnishings; their previous Boundless series of auctions, which showcased modern furnishings from the 20th century, were met with successful sales. This exhibition is a move in their latest plans on showcasing more Asian design. There is no question that decorative art and design are on the rise in Asia, says Kevin Ching, CEO of Sotheby’s Asia. Sotheby’s is excited to meet the burgeoning interest in this fast-growing market with a first class selection of contemporary design objects.  We look forward to showcasing the very best of Asia’s design talent to an international audience alongside our Hong Kong auctions this April.
