Ottawa’s ByWard Market has been working hard in recent years to draw in more visitors, offering everything from local products to unique experiences. Now, there’s a fresh addition right at the heart of it: Buvette Daphnée, a Montreal-inspired wine bar and fine dining spot done by Canadian architecture firm Ivy Studio. With a seasoned chef who has roots in Quebec and years of experience in Ottawa, the restaurant aims to bring together the best of both places.

Buvette Daphnée is set in a 1,500-square-foot unit in an old industrial building. The layout is straightforward. The dining area is up front, and the prep kitchen is tucked away at the back. The main space, visible from the street, is split into two sections.

One side offers a cosy vibe, with an 8-foot ceiling, banquette seating, and proper dining tables. The other side is a bit more casual, with a 15-foot ceiling, an open kitchen, and a massive 36-foot U-shaped bar surrounded by high-top counters. Whether you’re after a proper sit-down meal or just a drink and a light bite, there’s a spot for you.

The design pulls from the classic diners of Quebec, but with a clean, modern twist. The colour scheme mixes warm tones like caramel, brown, and cream, with splashes of light blue to keep things fresh. The original exposed brick walls stay put, giving the place a bit of grit, while glossy cream-painted panels add a more polished feel.

There’s a lot of attention to detail too. The caramel-coated booths stand out with their tambour backs. Walnut millwork, vintage chairs, and cognac leather banquettes bring warmth, while the stools and booths covered in light blue velvet add a softer touch. Burnt orange accents, like the bar lights and server station, pop out just enough.

The floor features custom mosaic that pulls all the colours together. It’s bold without being over-the-top and gives the whole place a bit of character.

The lights in this place aren’t just for show. Above the bar, there’s a 30-foot-long bespoke fixture made by Hamster, a Montreal-based design team. It’s sleek and modern, showing off the city’s creative side.

And then there’s a nod to history. Four frosted globes dangle above, recycled from Montreal street lamps from the 1960s. They’ve been reworked by Studio Botté, keeping a bit of the past alive in a very modern setting.
