Architect Juliana Miranda transforms a São Paulo apartment into an open, nature-inspired retreat.

Architect Juliana Miranda from Juliana Miranda Arquitetura spearheaded the renovation of a 1,830 sq.ft. apartment in São Paulo, Brazil, emphasising integration, comfort, and a harmonious relationship with nature. While initially focused on removing the bathtub from the primary bathroom, the project quickly expanded to incorporate a redesign of several key areas, including the living and dining rooms, balcony, and all bathrooms.

Miranda’s approach to the renovation involved creating open, interconnected spaces. By removing existing sliding doors and leveling the balcony floor, she facilitated a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor environments. This transformation was enhanced with custom millwork and new furniture, lending the apartment a contemporary, welcoming vibe.

A significant feature of the renovation was the use of traditional craftsmanship touches, such as a decorative muxarabi ceiling in the entrance hall, which added warmth and character. The integration of wooden finishes with a restrained gray palette achieved a modern aesthetic that reflects the residents’ preferences. The office bathroom was updated with an elegant combination of gray, deep green, and black, adding sophistication.

Material selections emphasized neutral, timeless finishes, with green introduced as a unifying color to connect interiors with nature. This shade was thoughtfully integrated throughout, appearing in areas like the balcony, living room, and bathrooms, infusing the apartment with a revitalizing ambiance. Though the residents were initially hesitant about bold colors, they embraced the calming influence of the green, which replaced some of the blue accents previously in place.

Lighting design was key in accommodating both residents' preferences. A flexible grid allows for varied lighting scenarios, balancing bright and ambient conditions, with all fixtures emitting a warm glow to reinforce a cozy atmosphere. The renovation was a collaborative effort, reflecting the couple's lifestyle and future aspirations while ensuring a smooth execution under Miranda's guidance.
