The fashionable owner of this Ho Man Tin abode, done by Root Design HK, has mastered the art of solo living.
Client Brief
A young professional woman living alone wanted a new apartment that would be tasteful and functional, with ample storage and thoughtful design tailored to her lifestyle.
Concept & Style
Root Design HK founder Anya Wu envisioned a solo living haven that features architectural touches and blends abundant hidden storage while keeping the space visually clean. The design incorporates an interesting play of materials and colour combinations, including specialty paint, natural stone, terrazzo, and marble.
Reconfiguration
Originally a four-bedroom layout, Root Design HK transformed the space into a two-bedroom sanctuary with expanded living and dining areas. “We begin every project by rethinking spatial arrangements and incorporating meaningful elements,” Wu explains.
Challenges
The original layout featured a fragmented four-bedroom design with a compact living area. The homeowner required ample storage space, but the original layout lacked functionality. Additionally, the visual impact upon entry was less than ideal.
Solutions
By reconfiguring the walls and reimagining the floor plan, Wu created a home that feels open, balanced, and proportionate. Gentle curves and arched doors have been incorporated throughout to soften the visual impact. A curved wall defines the dining room, separating it from the kitchen while creating a welcoming atmosphere. An arched doorway carved into the curve leads to a plant-filled nook, keeping the kitchen discreet. The space behind the curve doubles as storage, with cabinets that maximise every inch. “A functional layout is step one,” she stresses.
Four bedrooms were simplified into two to make room for two spacious walk-in closets. Extra storage space is cleverly hidden throughout — from a custom column-turned-cabinet that doubles as a room divider to a swivel shoe cabinet in the private elevator lobby. “That’s the beauty of a functional layout,” Wu says. “It keeps the home looking clean while catering to the homeowner’s storage needs.”
Tips
- Using lights at different heights and angles creates a sense of depth and draws attention to key areas. Pendants define central spaces, ceiling lights provide balance, and spotlights accentuate details. A smart system helps adjust these layers for the perfect mood at any time.
- In the master bathroom, switchable glass replaces traditional wall tiles to allow for better light and sense of space.
- Leave the blank areas give artworks and décor room to breathe, elevating the overall sophistication of the interior.
