From design fairs to gallery openings, workshops and parties—there is always a smorgasbord of events to entice design and cultural connoisseurs in this city. We highlight a few of our favourites:

Murakami vs Murakami Exhibition

Japanese super-star artist Takashi Murakami, who has thrilled as much as confounded the contemporary art world with his striking, outlandish works, presents a major survey exhibition titled Murakami vs Murakami at Tai Kwun Contemporary from June 1 to September 1.

Featuring over 60 paintings and sculptures from divergent ends of his oeuvre, from large-scale post-apocalyptic works to his optimistic flower pieces, as well as some of the artist’s iconic and outlandish costume designs to be showcased for the first time—this survey looks at the intriguing paradoxes embodied in the work and life of Takashi Murakami, and the multifaceted cultural phenomenon he has spurred.

A host of related activities will also take place, including a public discussion with Takashi Murakami and Tobias Berger on June 1 and a special pop-up store featuring Murakami’s products will also open in F Hall Studio over the course of the exhibition.

June 1 to September 1, 2019. JC Contemporary & F Hall Studio at Block 17, 10 Hollywood Rd, Central. taikwun.hk

French painter and printmaker André Brasilier marks his 90th birthday this year with a solo exhibition titled André Brasilier in Hong Kong.

The dynamic retrospective charts the momentous career of the Saumur-born Brasilier, who has been painting for over 65 years, in a series of oil-on-canvas or watercolour works that focus on the themes of horses, nature, music and women. With influences of Expressionism and Japanese ‘Edo’ print work, the artist draws from language, sounds and colours in an attempt to create natural beauty untouched by daily trivialities and events.
