The bright and cheery home an interior architect designed for her parents

Any designer will tell you that each project is a creative collaboration. When interior architect Alice Chow set out to remodel her parents’ home in Tai Kok Tsui, however, her family gave her an encouraging carte blanche to do as she saw fit with their spacious, two-floor abode.

Though she had free rein on the look and feel of the space, Alice had her parents’ interests at heart when she transformed the existing closed-off kitchen and adjoining rooms into an airy open-plan kitchen and dining room. The designer knocked down two bedrooms to make space for a cooking theatre so that her mother could cook while entertaining the family and their many visitors. To satisfy her father’s wishes, she installed a traditional fish pond on the ample terrace, put in large sliding doors and glass partitions to bring nature into the home, and created vantage points to admire the sunny terrace from the first floor of their flat.

Comfort and relaxation were  essential to designing the interconnected living room. In the dining room, mint-hued dining chairs from Magis are paired with a streamlined Lapalma dining table.

The Walter Knoll Bao chair echoes the clean-lined look of the living room; all the furniture was sourced from BW Furniture. The guest bathroom looks onto an alleyway, which was transformed into a pocket garden.

Adjacent to the living room and leading onto the terrace is a multifunctional room – it could be configured as a guest bedroom with its handy Murphy bed or as a children’s play area. A playful wallcovering from Tat Ming is the focal point in this bedroom.
