With Hong Kong’s stunningly rapid development as an arts hub, it’s easy to forget that the city is still a relative newcomer to the broader art stage, having exploded into the global arts world within the past five years alone. Now, March is an exciting time with a host of fairs and exhibitions infusing dynamic energy throughout the city.

Art Central

This year's edition of Art Central has the fair jumping on Hongkongers' love of photographic works by bringing in works by emerging photographic artists such as Won Beomsik and Chen Jinan. They are also partnering up with 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art for a dedicated performance art programme. March 21-25.

Art Basel

A mainstay of the global contemporary art scene, Art Basel in Hong Kong returns with a programme that’s as vibrant as it’s innovative. A plethora of international and domestic galleries will present works in the established categories, such as Discoveries (emerging artists) and Encounters (large-scale installations), but also, for the first time, in Kabinett, with specially curated projects displayed in separate areas of galleries’ booths, ranging from one-person shows to thematic group exhibitions and films. March 23-25.

There Should be No End to Experimentation

Abstract artworks by the late Zaha Hadid that are reminiscent of her iconic architectural style will be on show at ArtisTree presented by the UK's Serpentine Galleries. March 17-April 6.

Tarry Skies and Psalms for Now

Sculptor, installation and performance artist and social activist Theaster Gates returns to White Cube for a not-to-be-missed satellite show, which extends his examination of the empowerment of place. March 21-May 20.

Asia Contemporary Art Show

Held at the Conrad Hong Kong, the 10th edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show assembles more than 80 galleries from Asia and beyond, with a focus on emerging and mid-career artists. This year marks the introduction of two new features: China Perspectives and Artist Projects. March 17-20.

Bright Idea

Bright Idea is a site-specific installation that transcends disciplines, created by British artist Michael Craig-Martin for The Peninsula’s third collaboration with Britain’s Royal Academy of Arts. 20 March-31 May.
