Edinburgh’s UNESCO-protected New Town doesn’t exactly inspire feelings of warmth upon first glance, given the neighbourhood’s makeup of regal yet austere Georgian architecture that stand in uniform rows and terraces along cobblestoned streets. Yet within one of these historic buildings is housed Eden Locke, a new boutique hotel that wears its love for soft pastels on its sleeve.

Seeing the potential in its high ceilings and generous proportions, architecture firm Grzywinski+Pons set about with a complete gut renovation of the 18th-century grey sandstone-clad Georgian mansion and its 20th-century extension. The result consists of a cafe and bar on the ground floor and 72 suites above.

The interiors are designed around welcoming in the warm Scottish light, enhanced with the use of tropical hues and custom-designed furniture in bent wood, cane, wicker and terra cotta, partially obscured amongst lush indoor vegetation. The direct contrast with the building’s light interiors and its exterior of Craigsleith Quarry ashlar create a sense of pleasant surprise once guests enter.

The architects capitalized on the larger period fenestration and lofty ceilings in the public areas of the rooms.

Prodigious use of rattan and bent wood in the furniture defies the Scottish chill outside.

Glazed fanlights and wrought iron are framed by glass, timber and stone throughout.
