Without doubt, the dining room is where people come together. Family and friends gather around the table for delicious food, good wine and plenty of conversation. The essence of the space lies in creating the right atmosphere with clever design solutions, while also celebrating your signature style.

I personally don’t like mirrors for dining rooms as I find them very distracting. Interesting artwork is much more impactful. However, a reflective ceiling can be beautiful in candlelight.

Make sure the shape of your dining table suits the shape of the room. And always have a plan for extensions, the more the merrier.

I am seeing more and more dining spaces that double as libraries, which create a comfortable and cosy atmosphere.

Shades of black, white and platinum, with black marble and white harlequin-patterned floors make for a very dramatic dining space.

With lighting, there are so many choices, but make sure you select pieces with the right proportions for your space. Check that you have enough ceiling height to accommodate a large chandelier – from the bottom of the light to the floor, you should have 1.7 metres. 

Artwork is a crucial element in the dining room that ties in your aesthetic and conveys your personality.
