Andrew Glenn and Jonathan Rutherford Best never planned on moving to Auckland. Back in 2010, they were based in London, but quit their jobs and went travelling.
Part of the trip took them through Ubud in Bali, where they got married, and they also decided to go to New Zealand for a couple of months. They ended up staying for good. We just felt it was a good time,” notes Jonathan. New Zealand is a more progressive place.”

The couple were attracted to their one-bedroom Auckland bolthole because of its central location, just a seven-minute walk from the ferry to Waiheke. It is housed in what was originally a 1926 warehouse for a kitchen appliance firm called Fisher & Paykel. I always laugh and say we’re very lucky to have similar tastes”, asserts Andrew. Otherwise, we’d be arguing all day long.” Our look is eclectic, but classic”, adds Jonathan. Andrew is probably a little more austere and I’m a little more maximalist.” They were inspired both by the work of New York-based designers Roman & Williams and by the Château Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. The result here has something of a Manhattan-meets-Shanghai spirit.
