A 1900s heritage dwelling has been remade as a home for a young family in the inner city of Melbourne.
Taking a fresh approach to the inner city block, the design team from Beauty Bloody Bonza takes advantage of the site’s length to create a courtyard house with a secluded backyard. Facing north, the single storey kitchen and dinning area link the two-storey volumes which anchors the east and west. The large glass sliding doors there provide a seamless connection to the garden, opening up the house to the temperate Melbourne environment.
To the east, the original configuration houses the children’s bedrooms and family bathroom. A large master suite sitting above overlooks the serene garden below. The west wing houses the family living room with library and study, the brick screens offering privacy from the house’s neighbouring properties while delivering dappled light to the living spaces.
Brick walls and angled roof forms nod to the heritage context and surrounding neighbourhood, with the Australian landscape as a touchpoint for the interiors. Natural timber is offset by warm mineral colours and black metal to create a palette that resembles the earth and the trees.
