• Don’t skimp on tableware. Buying high-quality glasses, plates and cutlery will instantly improve the atmosphere of your dining room.

• Aim for timelessness in choosing your furniture. Plan for a room that will last at least 10 years, which means pieces that don’t look so gimmicky you will tire of them when fashions change.

• Functionality is the most important. Everyone has their own way of living, so make sure you create a space that suits the way you actually live, not necessarily the way you wish you lived.

• No white light – whatever the lighting mix you choose, avoid anything above 3,000K in temperature, because it creates a harsh atmosphere that won’t put you or your guests at ease.

• Bold artworks can make a plain wall look more interesting. If there’s space, consider buying a sculpture to put on a stand or on the floor.

• A good dining table depends on the proportion of the dining area, regardless of whether it’s round or square. Timeless choices always include marble or a combination of stainless steel legs with a glass top.
