Fashion designer Matthew Williamson on his collection for Duresta

Glamour, colour and pattern come together in Matthew Williamson’s work, whether he’s creating ball gowns full of flair or bright, bold wallpapers. These hallmarks have brought him considerable success since he founded his fashion house in 1997. Now he is moving into upholstery – a natural progression that has seen him produce a range of elegant yet playful home furniture in collaboration with Duresta.‭ ‬

The collection is broad and varied in styles, and takes influences from different eras to create a unique, laid-back, almost bohemian feel, which is what I wanted to express. I love the rich colours and printed fabrics, which were inspired by my love of nature. It’s furniture made to make you smile.

I was inspired by French Louis-style pieces in carved wood, the graphic lines of modern Italian furniture and the simplicity and retro feel of mid-century pieces. My aim is to mix things up so your home feels unique and not like a showroom with everything matching. This is how I live, and I wanted to reflect that eclecticism within the collection.

It’s dramatic, romantic and whimsical, which I love – it’s also super practical and comfy, and works so well in most rooms, adding real impact.

I enjoyed the creative process, which took approximately 18 months from initial ideas to seeing the first finished samples of furniture. I loved visiting the Duresta workroom and seeing all the various processes involved and the skilled craftsmen. I learnt a lot about a new creative discipline.

I’ve loved interiors and interior design for as long as I can remember, so to create my own furniture was a dream come true. Next on my list are chinaware, lighting and bedding to complete the whole MW look.

I’m looking forward to taking on some interior commissions for private clients; it would be wonderful to create rooms with my style but for specific clients’ tastes and needs. Perhaps one day I’ll get to do an MW hotel, which would, for me, be a dream job.
