Copenhagen is famous for its The Little Mermaid statue, the most photographed mermaid in the world, for its delicious, open-faced smørrebrød sandwiches and for its millions of bikers. Of course, it’s a haven for contemporary and minimalist design, as well. Plan a holiday there and you won’t be lacking intriguing locales to explore, from Michelin-starred restaurants to design studios rocking the world with their game-changing collections.

The Danish Museum of Art and Design

Those looking to learn more about Danish and Nordic design should visit the Danish Museum of Art and Design. The former royal Frederik’s Hospital, one of Copenhagen’s finest rococo buildingswas renovated and adapted into a museum in the 1920s by architects Ivar Bentsen and Kaare Klint. Take a breather in between fashion, design and art exhibitions at the open garden in the centre of the museum. It’s used as an exhibition space, but in the summer you can sit at the picnic tables under the sky and enjoy the outdoor cafe service.

Ordrupgaard

Housed in a historic villa, Ordrupgaard features paintings by the likes of Monet and Gauguin among its permanent collection, and has a rich calendar of exhibitions besides. The surrounding park and new wing designed by Zaha Hadid also make this museum more than worth a visit.

Finn Juhl’s home

Next to the Ordrupgaard museum is the home and studio of the late Finn Juhl, one of the most famous Danish architects and artists of the 20th century. It presents a unique opportunity to transport yourself back to the 1950s when Scandinavian design was born.
