Interestingly coined “Viewing Back”, this 6,103sqft brick structure nestled within a carefully constructed green canopy is the brainchild of acclaimed design firm HYLA Architects.
The striking two-storey family home is perched on an elongated plot of land, with the interiors peeking out from behind the structural facade of granite and glass. Resembling a contemporary glass house of sorts, the exterior also features elegant wooden slat walls that offer the family who resides in it even further privacy.
They also allow for the residents to take full advantage of the home’s north-facing direction; from many of the expansive windows and openings, residents are treated to a glimpse into the garden of Singapore’s former Command House
The homeowners’ distinct affection towards nature is instantly visible from the entrance, where a striking staircase has been designed with floating timber steps that lead up to the central outdoor foyer, which even from the entry doorway, can be seen punctuated with towering, verdant green trees.
In contrast to the staircase that is lined on one side with dark bricks, the foyer is drenched with natural sunlight thanks to the double volume void that frames the foyer on all sides, including the ceilings. A meticulous rectilinear screen and pergola stretches across the building and blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors, offering glimpses of the views outside while providing just enough shading for those living under it.
Among the design features that stand out with the home is the location of its full length open living and dining areas, which are situated on the second floor. This, in turn, allow for these spaces to be offered some of the best elevated views of the surrounding landscape.
Beautifully complementing the tree-surrounded setting is the contemporary, sleek interiors, which are dominated by natural materials such as warm timber, textured brick and luxurious marble. Intricate shadows stream in from the ceiling screens, casting an interesting shadow on the lower floor infinity pool that overlooks beautiful vistas of the surrounding lush green landscape.
