The London Festival Of Architecture returns for its 15th year, offering over 400 events taking place this month following the theme of "boundaries". Overwhelmed? Don't worry—we've rounded up our five must-sees below.
A New Kind of Suburbia
In this exhibition, architecture, urban planning and design practice Metropolitan Workshop offers a new vision of the suburban neighbourhood in response to the United Kingdom's current housing problem, which involves a limited supply of homes at prices higher than the average buyer can afford. In place of large private homes and parking spaces arranged inefficiently, Metropolitan Workshop proposes a suburb that promotes shared public spaces, flexibility, and a local identity. June 3-28, 9:30am to 6pm.
Lunch Break
40 golden angels sit on swings outside St Paul's Cathedral, highlighting the structure's beautiful architecture. This site-specific, large-scale installation is the result of a collaboration between architecture studio KHBT and artist Ottmar Hörl, who won a design competition organised by LFA, the City of London Corporation and Cheapside Business Alliance. June 1-30.
Poliform presents images of London's architecture
The British arm of the contemporary Italian furniture brand joins forces with artist Rich Stapleton, who has taken a series of photographs of London's striking architecture in order to explore the notion of boundaries—between social strata, aesthetic styles, and more—that buildings perpetuate. Visit Poliform's flagship showroom on King's Road to explore. June 1-30, 10am to 6pm.
Paper Castles
The renowned Victoria and Albert Museum's Architecture Gallery is home to countless models and drawings by major architects from the 15th century to the present. For the festival, the museum invited 15 architecture practices to imagine how the sites in the collection would look in future. These practices crafted paper models of their concepts, which will sit on top of the gallery's display cases to create a dialogue between past and future. June 1-30, 10am to 5:45pm.
Serpentine Pavilion 2019
The Serpentine Galleries launch their annual architecture commission, which has historically been a hotbed of experimentation courtesy of the world's leading architects. This year's pavilion doesn't disappoint, featuring a creation by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami that is bound to astound. June 21-October 6.
