Design Dilemmas
Problem: My bedroom is really long and narrow, how can I make the most of this awkward space?
Solution: First, choose a bed that you like and that fits your space. You should be able to move around it, or at least around two sides, so that you can get in and out of it. The rest of the room can work around the bed. If there isn’t room for bedside tables but there’s room for at the foot of your bed, put a bench or fashionable trunk here. Tie it in with an area rug that picks up on hues in your headboard, bedding and cushions.

Problem: Our bedroom doesn’t have any windows. How do we make it less gloomy?
Solution: It’s a legal requirement, as per the Housing Standards of Domestic Buildings in Hong Kong, that every habitable room have natural lighting and ventilation from one or more windows, so don’t rent or buy a home that doesn’t have windows in the bedroom. If you’ve already bought the place, consider creating a space for the bed only. Good lighting – both natural and artificial – is key, so consider incorporating a pair of table lamps and a good reading light.
