Within the historic Old Town Chinatown of Portland, Oregon, a new boutique accommodation stands out in the neighbourhood.

In a building dating back to 1906, The Hoxton by London-based hospitality group Ennismore takes over the site of the former Grove Hotel.

Featuring a redesign by their in-house team, Ennismore Design Studio, The Hoxton is dressed with modernist-inspired interiors: beautiful walnut panelling and timber columns; lush, patterned velvet and leather seating; colour motifs of rust, emerald, navy; white-tile walls against blue and mustard-tile floors.

The hotel’s 119 rooms, categorised into Shoe Box, Snug, Cosy and Roomy, are slathered in natural light thanks to generous floor-to-ceiling windows. Original artwork selected by local gallery Upfor feature in the rooms, as well as ceramics by local makers Clay Factor, and shelves with books handpicked by locals – also known as Hox Friends, 119 of them each paired to a room by the hotel to curate its book selection and offer neighbourhood tips.

Guests also get a fridge stocked with local, supermarket-priced provisions, and a daily emergency breakfast bag.

A trio of dining options, designed by Ennismore and Fettle Design, are available on-site: all-day dining La Neta on the ground floor, offering Mexican-inspired cuisine; rooftop taqueria Tope; and a basement bar featuring cocktails focused on rice-based spirits and Asian ingredients, as well as American-Chinese fare.
