Depending on whom you ask, the word luxury” can mean very different things. For textile business heiress Veronica Chou and her husband, Russian entrepreneur Evgeny Klyucharev, the answer appears to be a home filled with stories. The couple commissioned close friend Laura Cheung, interior designer and founder of home decor and lifestyle brand Lala Curio, to design their Hong Kong home two years ago. The result is a stunning Mid-Levels apartment filled with the fun and flirty contemporary chinoiserie aesthetic for which Lala Curio is renowned. Their first home in Hong Kong is a quintessential Hong Kong home,” says Laura. They celebrate traditional Chinese craft; everything was produced and made in China. There should be stories in every element in the space so that when they’re hosting, they can talk about it.”

[Lala Curio] embraces chinoiserie but add our own elements into it, too,” explains Laura. We add this contemporary humour and make traditional crafts relevant to modern-day living.” This approach can be found in every detail of Veronica and Evgeny’s apartment, from fabrics co-opted from 1890s Japanese obis to beautiful cloisonné tiles filling the bathroom. We use crafts that were celebrated in the Imperial Palace once upon a time,” Laura continues. Back in the day, cloisonné was only allowed to be used by the emperor; commoners were not allowed to use it.”

Since the homeowners travel frequently – true global citizens, as Laura calls them – the home will be one of a number of bases around the world, including those in Russia and Switzerland. The newly completed space looks like it will make a perfect haven for entertaining guests and raising their family while they’re in Hong Kong. Everything is very poetic, very whimsical,” says Laura, summing up what sets the home apart from any other in the city. From the wallpaper to the furniture to the accessories, there’s a theatricality within the space.”
