The Home Journal Awards returned with a bang for its third rendition, honouring the best in fine design across a multitude of interior disciplines.
Creating a soulful space is no easy feat – and for the past two years, it has only become more challenging. But with every challenge comes opportunities. Designers and creatives have demonstrated in this critical time a whole new level of problem-solving and design prowess that have brought to life superlative projects against all odds.
To celebrate these achievements, the Home Journal Awards returned for its third rendition this year to recognise the best in fine design spanning two main categories – the Best Designer Awards and Best Brand Awards.
Winners were determined by a distinguished judging panel of design experts and industry pioneers, including Steve Leung Design Group’s chief creative officer Chong Chiu Fung; AB Concept co-founder and principal Ed Ng; MAD Architects principal partner Yosuke Hayano; Groundwork Architects & Associates co-founder and design principal Manfred Yuen; HKDA chairman Karr Yip; HKDA vice chairman Mui Kinoshita; and Home Journal managing editor Jennifer Chan.
The jury based its judgments on five evaluation criteria: innovation, functionality and utility, aesthetic, sustainability, and design impact.
“The entries we received this year saw a good mix of the aforementioned qualities,” Chan said.
“Each of the projects that won an award demonstrated solid creative and technical skills which led to such impressive outcomes. Congratulations to all winners, they should be justly proud of their efforts.”
One notable category was the Residential: Apartment (800 – 1,500 sq.ft.) sponsored by Samsung Electronics, which was awarded to Starz Pasha for its ethereal residential project Nude Flat. The design practice also clinched the coveted Emerging Designer of the Year title for being the highest scored design firm in this year’s programme.
Another highlight was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to reputed artist-architect-designer Raymond Fung Wing Kee, former senior architect of the Architectural Services Department of HKSAR Government, for his unwavering dedication to propelling forward Hong Kong’s architecture, interior design, and art industries.
This year’s awards came together at a glamorous cocktail ceremony that brought together lifestyle brands, interior designers, and Home Journal readers – a founding vision of the event.
Held at The Chinese Library, Tai Kwun, the Home Journal Awards 2022 ceremony was attended by 160 honourable guests and judges, who were dressed in the theme of chinoiserie chic – an aesthetic that reflects the city’s unique cultural heritage of East meets West.
“Connecting brands, interior designers and readers has always been front and centre at Home Journal,” Chan said. “We are pleased that the night served as a platform for the industry to get together and for creativity to spread.”
Taking pride of place on the floor was a well-appointed living lounge curated by Samsung in collaboration with Grande Interior Design. It was a creative showcase of how The Frame and The Serif televisions, as well as the Freestyle projector, the Smart Monitor M8, and the Bespoke Fridge, can elevate our quality of life through good design.
Inspired by the restaurant’s design ethos, this artful corner embraced different wood tones to echo the original wooden floors and window frames of the heritage building it resides in, channelling a sense of sophistication and cosiness that blended right into the restaurant’s vibe.
At the fore of the Samsung corner is the Frame TV. Designed to double as a work of wall art when not in use, the Frame comes with customisable bezels likened to picture frames, available in four colourways – beige, black, white and brown. With the Matte Display mode on, it appears like a painting in your living room that fits right into homes of any style.
Standing next to it is the Serif TV, which boasts a slim I-shaped design supported by an elegant casing, making it a statement piece that reveals one’s personality and taste.
Also on display is the portable Freestyle projector, allowing you to turn any room into a high-performing theatre; the Smart Monitor that offers the best work-from-home solution; and the Bespoke Fridge that comes in a flurry of colours and finishes for customisation.

The Best Designer Awards – which spanned a total of 18 categories – celebrated residential and commercial interior design projects that brilliantly balanced a multitude of considerations and needs.
